Reid Cemetery, also called the McFarland Cemetery

Click here to see a larger version of the aerial photo.

Location: T-48-N; R-17-W; Section 25 SENE.

Directions: From the Court House in Boonville, go south on Highway "B" about five miles to Panther Creek Road, which is about 1/2 mile south of the Petite Saline Creek. Go 1/2 mile east on Panther Creek Road and turn south onto a dirt farm road. After 1/2 mile, the road climbs a ridge and comes to a gate just past an old barn (where the red '+' is in the aerial photo). 50 feet beyond the gate, on the right side of the road are two trees (spruce and maple(?); they are the two dark spots in the photo immediately below the '+') in an open field on the gradually rising ridge. The headstones of the cemetery are around and between the two trees.

Condition of cemetery in 2004: None of the headstones are standing upright. Some are broken, some are face-down. and some are almost entirely buried. A 1976 description of the cemetery mentions an iron fence around part of it; this fence no longer exists. The farmer who owns the property (Vieth) said the previous owner made the dirt road run right through the cemetery, between the two trees. Vieth changed the dirt road to go around the graves. The cemetery is in grave danger of disappearing, and would need alot of work to identify all of the visible stones. Undoubtably, there are headstones that are completely buried, or broken into many small pieces. [Nancy talked to Vieth's over 80-year-old Mother; she said her husband's Mother had married several times, once to a Crawford.] The stones that were identifiable read:
